Pehla Qadam- Activity with the slum kids

To understand the needs of our community we need to spend time with them, understand their latent needs and behaviours and study the root cause of problems. Following this thought process, we planned to have one day activities with various segments and people of Pakistan.

Design Pakistan spent a day with extra- talented kids from the slums on 25th Oct 2014. These kids from the marginalised community have a poor access to education and quality life. The official literacy rate of Pakistan is 56% and any person who can only sign their name is considered literate in our country. As the name of the activity suggests ‘Pehla Qadam‘ (first step). We helped them take the first step towards education by  teaching them how to write their name and then use it in creating an art work about themselves. This was an opportunity for these children to enjoy self expression and understand their identity. Pakistan struggles with the concept of identity. In an indirect manner we are giving these children a first insight into discovering their own identity through art. We aim to further build on this development and have activities to take this process further.
